    In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and Audi key shell then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

    1. Engine Speed Sensor

    The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

    The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

    If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

    Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

    2. Injectors

    Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

    I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

    I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

    The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

    4. ECU
