Baume & Mercier has announced a new limited edition Hampton model, "Homage to Pierre Soulages," in tribute to Pierre Soulages, a master of modern art. This piece, inspired by his work in general, is a unique piece covered in a unique texture.

Baume & Mercier has announced a new Hampton collection that pays homage to Pierre Soulages, a 32-year-old active painter born in 1919. Known for his exploration of "black," his work creates various undulating effects using tools such as brushes, creating a unique expression within the black color. As he himself said, "When the reflected light is strong, the black element becomes less black, and the presence of the surface state becomes stronger and more active," when moving in front of the work and viewing it, the appearance changes with the light, appealing to the viewer's presence.

The Soulage Museum, built in Rodez, the city in southwestern France where he was born, is an art museum that owns the world's only collection of this "master." This time, Baume & Mercier, with the cooperation of the Soulage Museum and the museum's enthusiasts, has created a one-of-a-kind watch that pays homage to Pierre Soulage's work.

New technology to reproduce the texture of the work

New technology was essential to realize this work, which can be said to be a fusion of art and watchmaking. To reproduce the texture of his large canvas paintings on a small watch dial, Baume & Mercier used 3D printing technology.

To find the ideal way to create a three-dimensional effect on a thin dial, revealing its fine details and sublimating them, Baume & Mercier studied the precise surface shape and repeatedly produced prototypes, including using wax. This new challenge was achieved by laser processing the brass dial. It is given a delicate texture like stone and is covered with a coating of about 0.2 microns of electrolytic plating. The surface is then covered with a semi-matt protective transparent lacquer about 3 microns thick, completing the controlled contrast of light and black.

The dagger-shaped, faceted hands are made of brass and coated with black PVD. At Pierre Soulages' request, gold color was added to the tips of the hands to elegantly emphasize the passage of time. To allow the dial to be viewed as a painting, the gold-colored Baume & Mercier logo is printed on the inside of the domed sapphire crystal rather than on the dial itself.

The transparent caseback reveals the Caliber ETA2892-A2, with its striking black rotor decorated with Côtes de Genève. The rotor is inscribed with the words "Hommage à Mr Soulages."

The case is machined from a block of stainless steel, and the entire surface is microblasted and then coated with approximately 2 microns of hydrogenated amorphous ionic carbon using a PACVD process (plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition), giving it a hardness of 6,000 Vickers.
